This is a necklace we have in stock. Handmade from 9ct solid gold.
Our adorable orangutan necklace features a finely hand-carved miniature monkey charm, swinging from a fine curb chain. The detail in this piece is exceptional, with brilliantly life-like tiny fingers and toes, an adorable curved belly and an animated, intelligent face. Jana has even captured the texture of this cheeky ape's trademark red hair.
Orangutans are arguably our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom. A recent study showed we share at least 28 unique physical characteristics with them, even the internal structures of our brains are very similar! But the future of our fascinating cousins is in peril. According to the WWF there are only 100,000 Bornean orangutans left, just 7500 of the Sumatran orangutan - making it a critically endangered species - and worst of all, as few as 800 of the Tappnuli orangutans survive.
The main cause for the decline of the orangutan populations is deforestation, due to the massive expansion of palm oil plantations in Borneo and Sumatra. You’ll find palm oil in many packaged foods, detergents, shampoos and toothpaste. We don’t often like to get up on our soapbox, but there are alternatives, so do try and look at the ingredients of your shopping and try to find an option without palm oil. We can all make a difference.
The perfect gift for any conservationist or orangutan fan, this monkey necklace is available in sterling silver, yellow or rose gold vermeil. We can also cast your orangutan in solid gold, in a variety of carats, if a real gold monkey necklace is what you’d really like.
£20 of the sale of every orangutan necklace sold will be donated to Ovaid, a charity dedicated to providing veterinary equipment, medicines and sending vets to orangutan rescue groups and centres in Indonesia and Malaysia. Ovaid and other charities vastly improve the outlook for these wonderful creatures, so hats off to them.
A statement piece to wear with pride, your orangutan necklace not only celebrates these super special animals, but also includes a donation to a charity that is helping to safeguard their future. It’s a win-win in the style stakes and the fight against extinction.

Because protecting our environment is important to us, we no longer offer gold plating. This process requires the use of many toxic chemicals. Instead, and where possible, we are using 100% recycled solid gold and silver. Better for us, better for the planet!
