Vaquita Porpoise Necklace
A handmade Vaquita pendant, intended as a conversation starter, a reminder, a "seed planter". The vaquita is the world's most endangered marine animal, found only in Mexico’s northern Gulf of California. Marine biologists estimate that only around ten of the animals remain, with the main threat being caught as bycatch in fishing nets.
The vaquita is only one of many marine creatures on the edge of extinction due to over-fishing. Industrial fishing is a major contributor to climate disasters (significant amounts of carbon dioxide are released through trawling and a huge amount of fossil fuels is being burnt for running these massive ships).
Up to 2.3 trillion(!) fish are being caught every year and around 300,000 whales, sharks and dolphins are injured or killed in the process. Not just do fish, like all animals, feel pain, but certain fish and mammals disappearing from the food chain will also destroy the delicate marine ecosystem which is vital for the survival of humanity as our oceans produce more oxygen than the rainforest.
We are donating £20 of each sale to Sea Shepherd, an international direct-action ocean conservation movement. If you haven't watched Seaspiracy yet, please do to find out more about Sea Shepherd's work and about the huge impact industrial fishing has on our planet and about the shocking decline of sharks and other marine animals vital for our ecosystem.
We have stopped eating fish last year as we believe reducing demand will be a catalyst for change. Like fish, we can get omega 3 directly from algae (or an algae supplement). It's a common misconception that fish are the original source of omega 3s. In fact, omega-3s come from algae – the foundational life form that feeds phytoplankton, which in turn is a primary food source for the fish that produce the omega-3 fatty acids.
